Description Eduard Nicodei 2009-03-22 12:03:51 UTC
Man pages are displayed incorrectly. The cause seems to be an incorrect man.conf provided by the ebuild. Line line 96 of man.conf reads:
      NROFF /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc

To solve the problem add " -Tascii -c " to the line above.
Note that this does not happen with man-1.6e. There, /usr/bin/nroff has both -Tascii and -c options enabled.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Just install man-1.6f-r3:
USE="-lzma nls" emerge "=man-1.6f-r3"
Actual Results:
This is part of the output from `man cat`:
ESC[1mSYNOPSISESC[0m
       ESC[1mcat ESC[22m[ESC[4mOPTIONESC[24m]... [ESC[4mFILEESC[24m]...

those are terminal sequences to enable bold and such. you need a supporting terminal as well as a properly configured pager. if you remove -R from LESS for example, it'll probably mess up the way you describe.

if you dont have any of these things (which are the defaults), that means you changed something and you can change man.conf to match your system.
