on amd64: apart from the problem mentioned in comment 1, which should be fixed indeed, app-benchmarks/stress-1.0.0 USE="-static" seems to work fine for me here: Portage 2.1.6.7 (default/linux/amd64/2008.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.8_p20080602-r1, 2.6.28-gentoo-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: Linux-2.6.28-gentoo-r3-x86_64-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_E6550_@_2.33GHz-with-glibc2.2.5 Timestamp of tree: Sun, 15 Mar 2009 22:45:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p39 dev-java/java-config: 2.1.7 dev-lang/python: 2.5.2-r7 dev-util/cmake: 2.6.2-r1 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.63 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.27-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/language.dat.d /etc/texmf/language.def.d /etc/texmf/updmap.d /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=nocona -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/var/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="distlocks fixpackages parallel-fetch protect-owned sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://gd.tuwien.ac.at/opsys/linux/gentoo/ http://mirror.uni-c.dk/pub/gentoo/ http://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/gentoo/ " LANG="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL="en_US.utf8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="en de" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/var/portage/packages" PORTAGE_CONFIGROOT="/" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/var/portage/repos/gentoo" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/var/portage/repos/layman/java-overlay /var/portage/repos/private" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow 3dnowext X a52 aac acpi alsa amd64 berkdb bluetooth branding bzip2 cairo caps cddb cdparanoia cdr cli cracklib crypt cups dbus djvu dri dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode evo exif fam ffmpeg firefox flac fortran gd gdbm gif gimp gnome gnome-keyring gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk hal hddtemp iconv icu ipv6 isdnlog java java6 jpeg jpeg2k kpathsea lcms libnotify lm_sensors log4j mad matroska midi mikmod mmap mmx mmxext mono mp3 mpeg mudflap multilib musicbrainz ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nvidia ogg opengl openmp pam pcre pdf perl plotutils png ppds pppd pulseaudio python qt3support quicktime readline reflection ruby sdl session spell spl sse sse2 ssl ssse3 startup-notification svg sysfs tcpd tetex theora threads tiff truetype unicode usb vcd vim-syntax vorbis xattr xine xinerama xml xorg xulrunner xv xvid zlib" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" CAMERAS="canon konica ptp2 kodak" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" KERNEL="linux" LINGUAS="en de" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia nv" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

what the...bad upstream! shipping an empty file and all. %% du -sh ./doc/stress.1 0 ./doc/stress.1 I removed it from the ebuild, hope you don't mind. amd64 stable.
Created attachment 189737 [details, diff] stress-1.0.0.ebuild.patch Actually, it seems that the file doc/Makefile should specify the file ../src/stress as a dependency of the stress.1 target. The attached patch makes the following changes to the ebuild: * Add sys-apps/help2man to DEPEND which is needed to generate the manpage. * Add empty RDEPEND. * Drop unneeded die from econf. * Remove the empty file stress.1 in src_unpack. * Remove redundant virtual/libc dependency. * Use emake instead of make in src_install.
+ 01 May 2009; Patrick Lauer <patrick@gentoo.org> stress-1.0.0.ebuild: + Applying fixes from Tiago Cunha, #261720 That should fix the manpage issues, thanks a lot Tiago
x86 stable
Created attachment 190446 [details, diff] stress-1.0.0.ebuild.patch Unfortunately, I've just noticed that app-benchmarks/stress does not respect Gentoo CFLAGS, and that's a no-go on SPARC, since GCC generates V7 code by default (which lacks hardware integer multiply or divide). The attached patch makes the following changes to the ebuild: * Don't use -Werror (fixes bug #260868). * Use AM_CFLAGS instead of CFLAGS to honour the user's CFLAGS (fixes bug #239949). * Use eautoreconf to regenerate the Makefile.in file, and the configure script. Not sure if this is the correct approach, though. I'm not proficient with autotools.
Patch committed, thus sparc stable, closing.
