khdapsmonitor is a nice GUI monitor for disk shock protection.
Kernel 2.6.28 and above started to support "unload head" method officially, but the path of sys file has changed:

before kernel 2.6.28:
/sys/block/${DISK}/queue/protect
after:
/sys/block/${DISK}/device/unload_heads

I suggest to check for unload_heads on startup first, and use it if it's available.
