How did you try to change DISTCC_DIR from the default value of /var/tmp/portage/.distcc to /root/.distcc ? Changing DISTCC_DIR from default value was not part of the instructions... so maybe that is where you went wrong.

Please post the output of `emerge -vp --nodeps sys-devel/distcc' too.
Looks like this patch is doing it: sys-devel/distcc/files/distcc-create-dir.patch which was introduced in distcc-2.18.3-r13.ebuild. @Ivan: Please confirm that is indeed the version of distcc you are using.
