Same thing here. Ubuntu users say they solve it by installing libxml2-dev package. http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/microdc-devel/2007-02/msg00005.html
Seems to be strange since I have libxml2 installed on the chroot, and no include file lists such names.
Unfortunately microdc2 has a naive (broken) configure script. It cannot identify libxml2 versions correctly. See lines 21500 in configure and few dozen ahead for yourself. On my amd64 box with libxml2 2.7.2 it ended up comparing 272 to 2616 -- and figured that the latter is newer. Thus, the script figured that my libxml2 is too old -- and consequently left out all xml stuff. Ergo, resulting in that strange error message. I patched the configure script a bit (commented out the offending if) and moved the 2.6.16 dependency requirement into the ebuild itself. Then the ebuild compiled on amd64. Haven't tried running it, though. Attaching files below.
Created attachment 168864 [details, diff] Patches out the faulty libxml2 version comparison Patches out the faulty libxml2 version comparison in configure and thus "force feeds" libxml2 into configuration. However, libxml2 is a required dependency so it shouldn't matter.
Created attachment 168870 [details] microdc2-0.15.6-r1.ebuild which applies the patch An updated ebuild with (1) a more stringent dependency on libxml2, and (2) applying the libxml2 configure patch (and (3) the Gentoo (C) header's year bumped to 2008, too).

Thanks, that did the trick
Why this still not committed?
Created attachment 202926 [details, diff] Improved version of Arttu Valo's patch (In reply to comment #9) > Why this still not committed? > I don't know why someone hasn't fixed it yet, but on the off chance the issue is with Arttu Valo's patch, here's a slightly improved one that resolves the issue instead of just commenting it out. ;-) Tested and working fine for me on amd64
this and https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162828 should be commited long time ago... :(

Peeking into bash's man-page, now it does a lexicographic ordering instead of the integer comparison? It will fix maybe ~9/10 of the cases, but it can still backfire in future in ugly corner cases like 2.8.10 vs. 2.10.1 etc. But maybe libxml2 devs are dedicated to keeping their version numbers (sans dots) lexicographically in the same order as in the actual version numbering scheme (with dots)? I don't know, so my worries over the semantics of the test may well be misplaced here.
bump
Why hasn't anyone looked at this? The bug prevents microdc2 from compiling, the supplied patch works fine on several systems and is resolved. Can we please get this moved into portage? (I mean, compiling microdc2 on my own is fun and all... but it would be nice to have it managed by portage)
Fixed, thanks for the patches and sorry for taking so long
