Description axelmasok 2008-09-28 11:55:34 UTC
Have recently started the acpid daemon to handle some ACPI events.
Unfortunately I can't stop acpid from logging events to my /var/log/messages.
I have no ACPI debugging enabled in my kernel 2.6.25 (in the ACPI section of it) and acpid is running without the (-d) debug flag. The old (-l) flag doesn't exist to tell acpid to log to /dev/null. The thermal events are the worst offenders, seeming to log events everytime the laptop fans change speed. I am using the default config files from the acpid package (default.sh). There doesn't seem to be anyone else in my situation as google and gentoo forums have very little.
Here is a topic I started recently to explain more:

you probably want to setup your system logging daemon to either send acpid events to separate log files and install logrotate to avoid excessive disk usage (always a good thing to have) or simply send them to /dev/null.

Please specify your current sys-power/acpid version in the Summary, and post your `emerge --info'.

Also, provide relevant information in or attached to this bug report and refrain from pointing to external sources of information (I'm not going to read entire forums threads to discover and provide that information here, as that's up to you.)

patch adds ability to turn off logging completely

I have no syslogd running on my laptop, so was really annoyed about acpid writing it's logs to console. I haven't found a way to turn syslog logging off, so i have written a small patch that adds ability to turn off logging completely. See "-N" option

Forwarded the patch to upstream for review/inclusion here:

<upstream quote>

The latest version of acpid includes the "-l" option which turns on event
logging. By default, in the later versions, event logging is off. Sounds
like you guys have an older version of acpid. I recommend upgrading either
to the latest that is here, or upgrading to the latest 2.0.x version which
can be found here:

So closing as fixed by 2.0.3.
