Description Shaun Bouckaert 2008-07-26 17:55:30 UTC
Upon visiting the URL http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/beijing_olympics/ the browser starts to load the page, reaches a point where the page seems to be loaded before crashing, causing the crash report dialogue to appear. I have tried running it in safe mode, and I still get a crash.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start the firefox browser (from portage, www-client/mozilla-firefox-bin-3.0.1-r1)
2. Visit http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/beijing_olympics/
3. The page will almost finish loading, and will suddenly crash

Actual Results:
The browser window would suddenly disappear and the crash report dialogue would appear. I could then restart the browser, which would load to the state before opening that window.

Expected Results:
The page should have finished loading and the site and remained running.

As I have mentioned, this has happened both running normally, with extensions and theme enabled, and in safe mode, so it is part of the browser itself.

I have tried loading the page in Opera in case there was some component being loaded they might share that would cause related problems, but Opera loaded the site without issue.

Seems to be working ok here. Are you sure it's not the flash player? I don't have it installed so I can't if it's the cause.

Can't reproduce either. Is this reproducible without any browser extensions? If so, please paste `emerge --info` output and make sure you can provide us with a usable backtrace. See http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml for more information.

It seems that it was the flash plugin. I was using the ~x86 version of flash (10_beta20080702). After I disabled this the page loaded, and so I downgraded to the stable unmasked version.

Ironically (and perhaps stupidly), I had originally upgraded in the hopes that it might help with some stability issues I'd had with Firefox generally relating to the flash plugin.

I should add though, should Firefox be crashing because of a badly behaving plugin? I would think it should protect itself from problems like these.

I don't think the site was rendering completely in Opera, but it definitely wasn't dumping me out of the browser.

Preferably not. This is up to mozilla.org, though. Forwarding bug to maintainers for awareness, but don't be surprised,if this bug will be resolved as an upstream issue.
