OK, to make it short, somebody messed up. The simplest way to fix it is to uncomment 'SNAPSHOT=yes' line. IIRC, the problem is due to the fact, that current ebuild first runs elibtoolize, then, due to the patch, 'missing --run' is triggered and it seems that the way elibtoolize does thing is incompatible with subsequent run of autotools.
I may be wrong about the reason, but the solution does work.
same problem for me on x86_64 and x86. Additionally I've got a P3 which does support SSE but not SSE2. The configure script lists MMX, SSE and SSE2 but there is no useflag for SSE. Would it be possible to add or was it left out for a reason?
I have libtool 2.2.4 and, for me, I just made a patch that removes LIBTOOL='$(SHELL) $(top_builddir)/libtool' in aclocal.m4 and replaces it with LIBTOOL='libtool'. It works but generates a bunch of libtool warnings along the way. For ex : configure.ac:67: warning: AC_CACHE_VAL(lt_prog_compiler_pic_works, ...): suspicious cache-id, must contain _cv_ to be cached Also, the configure script makes no mention of sse, so maybe only upstream only supports mmx and sse2.

Setting SNAPSHOT to yes triggers simply full eautoreconf, so 'missing --run' is never triggered. > Also, the configure script makes no mention of sse, so maybe only upstream only > supports mmx and sse2. > Well, yes, upstream does seem to support only mmx and sse2, but there is an explanation why (it's in configure.ac).
I think this is a dupe of the lower part of bug #232126 and should be fixed by uncommenting SNAPSHOT="yes" in the ebuild. Waiting on Doug Goldstein to fix it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 232126 ***
I still get that error with curretn ebuild which has: # Must be before x-modular eclass is inherited #SNAPSHOT="yes"
See that # in front of SNAPSHOT? That means it's commented out and is not active code. Anyway, please track the other bug. Looks like it's fixed if you sync and you are on gcc 4.2 or newer.
