I just wanted to point to this issue, but happily
leaving it to the Gentoo GRUB experts to judge ...

To me, the following quick experiment raised some doubt about this "GRUB bug" thesis:

USB stick with layout "3x primary | extended | 2x logical", each ext2,
GRUB installed on each of them;
menues like this:

default 0
  title=b5 --> b1
        rootnoverify            (hd0,0)
        chainloader     --force (hd0,0)+1
  title=b5 --> b2
        rootnoverify            (hd0,1)
        chainloader     --force (hd0,1)+1
  title=b5 --> b3
        rootnoverify            (hd0,2)
        chainloader     --force (hd0,2)+1
  title=b5 --> b5
        rootnoverify            (hd0,4)
        chainloader     --force (hd0,4)+1
  title=b5 --> b6
        rootnoverify            (hd0,5)
        chainloader     --force (hd0,5)+1

With this, I can merrily "chainload-toggle" through all of the 5 partitions ad libitum, including the logicals ;)

$ emerge -s grub
...
* sys-boot/grub

I'm not sure about it. Get upstream to comment themselves on it, then I may include it.
Comment 4 Manfred Knick 2008-07-06 07:03:00 UTC
An even _much_ simpler patch suggestion:

http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=5142693#5142693

"Get upstrem comment" is a bit tricky,
because GRUB-legacy (=0.9x) is unmaintained, as well known ...

Manfred: you linked to a GRUB2 patch here, and wormo provided the grub1 version in the linked bug 230905.

If upstream accepts the grub2 version, I can see by extension that the grub1 version introduces identical functionality, so I'll include the grub1 version when they include the grub2 version in grub2.

Thanks!

Sounds very sensible.
Thanks for taking care of this!
Kind regards
Manfred

Did upstream include the grub2 patch, somebody please find out and report back on this bug.

Since the patch is in bug 230905, I'm closing this bug, but somebody still needs to response to me if upstream accepted the grub2 patch.
