Description:   Opened: 2008-06-02 08:19 0000
After installation of samba-3.0.28a-r1 I no longer get the directory listing of
any share.

I had a working samba-3.0.28a installation and upgraded to samba-3.0.28a-r1.
Compile and restart work with no problem. But after the restart I do not get
any directory listing anymore. I down graded back to the old version but
problem remains. I now upgraded to samba-3.0.30 and problem remains. I did a
complete reinstall (emerge -e samba) with no success.

The listing that I do get looks like this :

willow ~ # ls -la /mnt/temp/
total 0

Reproducible: Always

If I check the running samba with smbstatus I get a normal status with no
indication of a problem. I also can see all the shares. If I localy mount one
of the share I can't see the dir listing but I can access the file if I type
the exact filename. I can also write the share. The new file is written with no
problem but is also not listed.
From a distant computer I also can see all the share but am not able the mount
any.

What is normally supposed to populate /mnt/temp? It seems like you would use a
kernel driver and /etc/fstab for that - you could even skip installing samba
now that net-fs/mount-cifs is split from the main package.

------- Comment #2 From Dirk 2008-06-02 14:02:34 0000 -------
(In reply to comment #1)
I used /mnt/tmp just for testing purpose. The share is supposed to be used by
other machines on the network. The problem is not the mounting of the share
since it can not be mounted by any machine on the network. Its the server part
of samba that causes a problem here.

------- Comment #3 From Dirk 2008-06-02 14:11:11 0000 -------
by the way. If I set the logging verbosity to 10 and start the server, mount
the share and do the directory listing, the only thing that by any chance looks
like an error message is the following :

Could you simply try the following: tell us on which system you issued what
command, what output you got and what output you had expected? Perhaps even
post your samba configuration - just anything that points out what worked
before and how it isn't working now.

It feels somewhat clear now that SMB clients have nothing to do with it - it's
a problem on the server that runs samba.

I have the samba server installed on the gentoo machine. The emerge --info I
have posted earlier is from this machine.

For testing I used the same machine as a client. Here I can mount the share on
a folder via smbmount or mount-cifs, but do not get a directory listing. Never
the less I can write to the share or even read the files on the share if I do
know the exact file name.
Normaly I would mount the share on some other machines on the network. Most are
Macs. Here I can't even mount the shares at the moment.

If I issue on the server
 smbmount //127.0.0.1/public /mnt/test/
I do get
 Password:
 Anonymous login successful

This is as expected. If I do after
 ll /mnt/test/
I do get
 total 0

And I would expect
 total 28
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jun 2 16:24 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Jun 2 16:23 ..
-rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19680 Jun 2 16:24 smb.conf

smb.conf is the only file on the share.

If I issue
 smbclient -L 127.0.0.1

I get

------- Comment #6 From SpanKY 2008-06-19 06:24:46 0000 -------
i'm seeing same behavior on my ppc when mounting from windows :/

software version similar setup on x86_64 shows no troubles

i'd like to say that 3.0.28 works for me, but after emerging 3.0.28,
3.0.28a-r1, and 3.0.30, i find all fail

oddly, it looks like samba is munging all requests to uppercase. for example,
my smb.conf is:
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
[global]
        workgroup = WH0RD.ORG
        server string = G5.wh0rd.org Samba
        security = SHARE
# encrypt passwords = yes
        preferred master = False
        domain master = False
        follow symlinks = yes
        log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
        hide dot files = yes

[src]
        path = /usr/local/src
        read only = yes
        guest ok = yes
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

and when i attempt to mount \\192.168.0.17\src, the samba logs complain about
no service SRC. so if i change "[src]" in my smb.conf to "[SRC]", samba can
find the declared service. but then directory listings are empty. however, i
can access files directly if i put in their exact path by hand ... and
attempting to browse to an invalid path does through up non-existent errors
while browsing to a valid directory works.

autoconf-2.62-r1 should fix things for you ... but it isnt the final/correct
fix, so we'll track things in Bug 228825
