Description Gabor Hudiczius 2008-04-04 00:36:50 UTC
all revisions of rtorrent (http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/) after r1040 fail with a segmentation faul, what happens when compiling dht_manager.cc

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. svn co -r 1041 svn://rakshasa.no/libtorrent/trunk/
2. cd libtorrent && ./autogen && ./configure && make && make install && cd ../rtorrent
3. ./autogen && ./configure
4. make

here's, what i could figure out:
r1040, and older works fine, any newer rev fail with the same error on the same place

it's the same with or without the xmlrpc-c support

i also tried to use a custom ebuild, to have the same environment as other ebuilds, but the error happened that time too

using the custom ebuild or the make, it does not throw segfault, it start eating up all the memory and the swapfile, until all of it is gone, and a few second later compiling stops with the following:

make  all-recursive

my system is a hardened gentoo and my kernel is 2.6.23-hardened-r7
the computer is a Pentium III (450/512/100/2V) in a BH6 with 224MB of ram, and 1GB of swap
Comment 1 Marcin Deranek 2008-05-30 08:36:25 UTC
Same here. Looks like cc1plus consumes all available memory and in the end gets killed.. To me looks like some bug get triggered in gcc..
Comment 2 Gordon Malm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-30 09:53:22 UTC
The segmentation fault issue when compiling dht_manager.cc appears to be resolved in rtorrent-0.8.2. The problem now is the behavior described by commentor #1, which is not the same. There is a new bug for that - bug 224031.

please read the full description
as i mentioned, when i'm using an ebuild, or just a make command, the same happens to me, what is described in bug 224031
segfault only appears, when i try to compile dht_manager.cc on it's own

No, I reproduced your segfault on dht_manager.cc building the SVN version. Afaics it is fixed in net-p2p/rtorrent-0.8.2. The build process gets through the dht_manager.cc step just fine. There is a new problem now - bug 224031, which I have also reproduced and is not the same problem as described in this bug. If I am wrong, and net-p2p/rtorrent-0.8.2 is still segfaulting on the dht_manager.cc step for you - please post your emerge --info and build.log for net-p2p/rtorrent-0.8.2 in its entirety. Thanks.

since my english is far from perfect, i might have been hard to understand at some point

i think, the reason emerge gets through the dht_manager.cc file, is the "-j3" option in my make.conf

after this error occures, if i go to /var/tmp/portage/net-p2p/rtorrent-0.8.2/work/rtorrent-0.8.2/src/core, segfault still happens on this command:
i686-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I../.. -I. -I./.. -I../..    -O2 -march=i686 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -DNDEBUG -I/usr/include/sigc++-2.0 -I/usr/lib/sigc++-2.0/include   -I/usr/include  -c -o dht_manager.o dht_manager.cc
this is the same command, what the ebuild executes
