You shouldn't specify the full path of the file since the user can specify whether to use gzip or bzip2 to compress the files. Instead refer to where the file can be found. References for why we should do this can be found at: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=169772 http://devmanual.gentoo.org/ebuild-writing/common-mistakes/
This file suffers from the exact same problem. Perhaps what we need is a ${COMPRESS_EXT} variable that the ebuilds could use. /usr/share/doc/courier-imap-4.0.6-r2/courier-imap-gentoo.readme.bz2
Mark, I would advocate changing the Summary for this bug to be more generic as there are other places where it comes up. Perhaps: /usr/share/doc/?dir?/?file? specifies the wrong extension based on compression. Perhaps an even simpler method is in order of saying see file /usr/share/doc/spamassassin-3.2.1-r1/INSTALL.*
