I am running Gentoo 1.4r2 world updated yesterday/ I did an update on Gnome which upgraded Gnome from 2.0 to 2.2. I was using Evolution 1.2.1 fine, although I cannot definitively say it worked exactly as before. After I did the Gnome upgrade, I did an 'emerge world' which updated, among other things, Evolution to 1.2.2. Now, I cannot launch a 'New Message'/ although I can preview messages. Here is the error I get: Could not create composer window. Unable to activate HTML editor component. Please make sure you have the correct version of gtkhtml and libgtkhtml installed. The error from the activation system is: Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occured. Here is the ebuilds I have installed, related to gtkhtml and Evolution: * gnome-extra/gtkhtml Latest version available: 1.1.7-r1 Latest version installed: 1.1.7-r1 Size of downloaded files: 1,054 kB Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/ Description: Lightweight HTML rendering/printing/editing engine. * gnome-extra/libgtkhtml Latest version available: 2.2.0 Latest version installed: 2.2.0 Size of downloaded files: 325 kB Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/ Description: a Gtk+ based HTML rendering library * gnome-extra/nautilus-gtkhtml Latest version available: 0.3.2 Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ] Size of downloaded files: 194 kB Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/ Description: libgtkhtml addons for Nautilus in gnome2 * net-mail/evolution Latest version available: 1.2.2 Latest version installed: 1.2.2 Size of downloaded files: 14,076 kB Homepage: http://www.ximian.com Description: A GNOME groupware application, a Microsoft Outlook workalike I wish I still had the snapshot of what exactly was updated from what version to what version , but I do not know how to get that info after the updates occurred. identical problem, with the additional problem of an error regarding the address book component not being able to start due to an unknown error.
this could be either an oaf/orbit problem or actually files missing from gtkhtml. did you make sure that any instance of your old evolution 1.2.1 was stopped? for example, using "killev" to kill all stray evolution 1.2.2 processes before starting evolution again. Are there any other warnings before it says it "could not create composer window"?

I rebooted. Just to make sure, after reading your question, rebooted again. Still get the error. "Are there any other warnings before it says it "could not create composer window"?" None that I can see. Preview works. Contacts work. Summary works. Ben
do you have /usr/bin/gnome-gtkhtml-editor-1.1 ?
ls -l /usr/bin/gnome-gtkhtml-editor-1.1 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 213748 Jan 27 14:16 /usr/bin/gnome-gtkhtml-editor-1.1
i believe there is something broken with your gtkhtml. could you please try: emerge gtkhtml evolution it might be something to do with gal-0.22 and gal-0.23 being upgraded. btw, there's a log of the pacakges that were upgraded in /var/log/emerge.log
I woke up this morning, and tried to reply to some email... Unfortunately this problem surfaced and I couldn't. I did an emerge gtkhtml and it fixed the problem.
modern blues ;)
I rebuilt gtkhtml and Evolution and the problem was fixed. I know of others who have had the same problem. I will send them to this bug report. Thanks! Ben
i'm glad its working for you now.
