What rubygems version was you using? If possible, can you edit $PORTDIR/eclass/gems.eclass? (you should make a backup and restore after the test) In line 71, there is: gem install ${GEM_SRC} -v ${PV} ${myconf} -l -i ${D}/${GEMSDIR} || die "gem install failed" please insert "echo" before "gem" and replace "||" with ";" so that it becomes: echo gem install ${GEM_SRC} -v ${PV} ${myconf} -l -i ${D}/${GEMSDIR} ; die "gem install failed" and post the emerge output here. First - I do not know (yet) what is "gems".
