Description David 2007-01-04 05:36:50 UTC
Similar to bug 131383, but I do not wish to clutter that one as this is slightly different. I have taken the current portage ebuild for mysql-gui-tools and modified it so that MySQL workbench compiles and runs fine on my system. I have only tested it briefly.

Download the ebuild and patch into an overlay and emerge with USE='workbench-alpha' set.

Some notes:

- Installed using x86, I do not believe that there are extra unstable package requirements other than those that mysql-gui-tools might need on its own

- The RDEPEND probably does not include everything that is really needed (and perhaps some of them should only be DEPEND). It includes everything I needed that was not installed on my system already, plus the opengl virtual. I am unsure if including virtual/opengl is the correct way to require opengl and I have not tried compiling without it installed. Please comment if it does not build because it is missing a dependency.

I took the list of depends from "extra requirements" at http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Building_MySQL_GUI_Tools_on_Linux, only I found uuid (so far) to not be needed.

- Similar to bug 131383, I found that it tries to link against -ltermcap. However this is only one small part of the common library that doesn't appear to use termcap (it uses slang.h from sys-libs/slang) and it links fine without. A patch is included that removes this from the configure scripts.

- The other two patches needed by bug 131383 do not appear to be needed on my system.

- The ebuild syntax may be wrong in places, my apologies for this. Please submit corrections :)

- Perhaps the USE flag is a bad idea or wrongly named.

Lastly, I hope that this hasn't been done elsewhere already and I am duplicating effort. b.g.o search is slow today and whilst I've looked, I've not found.

My emerge --info:

mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p8-termcap-fix.patch - disable the requirement for -ltermcap

Edits configure.in and configure.am for one part of the GUI tools package to disable linking against -ltermcap, which seems unnecessary.

I still run into this X error bug when starting mysql-workbench:
http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=21907

What USE flags do you use? Especially for X...

This is interesting. Google shows that a number of people have had similar errors with Firefox (due to the Flash plugin) and vnc. Can you run mysql-workbench under strace to see where the error occurs? Like the error report says, you might need to use --sync in order to see the proper place it crashes. Feel free to mail me if you want a hand with this.

Another bug report suggests exporting an environment var before running the app:

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

Try that also to see if it works for you.

> What USE flags do you use? Especially for X...

I pasted the output of emerge --info so people could see this, it should all be up above. I use modular xorg v7.1.

strace output

Don't know much about strace. Just ran 'strace mysql-workbench'. Hope, that's ok. If you need other info, just ask.

I also modified the mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p9.ebuild and it Mysql workbench works on amd64. Here are the lines I modified
52c52
< gnome2_src_compile $(use_enable nls i18n)
---
> gnome2_src_compile $(use_enable nls i18n) --enable-grt --enable-canvas
60,61c60,61
< # cd "${S}"/mysql-workbench
< # gnome2_src_compile
---
> cd "${S}"/mysql-workbench
> gnome2_src_compile
74,75c74,75
< # cd "${S}"/mysql-workbench
< # gnome2_src_install
---
> cd "${S}"/mysql-workbench
> gnome2_src_install

resuming, adding "--enable-grt --enable-canvas" to the following line:
	gnome2_src_compile $(use_enable nls i18n) --enable-grt --enable-canvas

and uncommenting the lines related to mysql-workbench

mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p10.ebuild

An updated mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p10.ebuild

Have posted the full ebuild rather than a diff. as there are many additions and changes.

Incorporates David's -ltermcap fix as a sed strip instead of a patch.
Libtermcap now being deprecated in favour of -lncurses which mysql-gui-tools links against anyway (see bug #103105).

Includes two required dependencies:
virtual/opengl
dev-lang/lua

Also includes the '-nls' USE flag fix as discussed in bug #167867

Just an idea, but perhaps we could scrap the following ebuilds...
dev-db/mysql-administrator
dev-db/mysql-query-browser
...and roll them all into the one mysql-gui-tools ebuild with the USE flags 'nls administrator browser migrate'

The mysql-migration-tool being the only tool as part of mysql-gui-tools not covered by an ebuild.
Comment 8 Rick Harris 2007-03-08 08:45:28 UTC
Lets not forget 'workbench' from the proposed USE flags :)
USE flags 'nls administrator browser migrate workbench'

Fixes the nls problem

The new ebuild dies if the nls USE flag is set. This patch fixes this.

Oops, this one doesn't seem to work properly for me:

/usr/lib/ccache/bin/g++ -march=nocona -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -mmmx -msse2 -mfpmath=sse -pipe -fexceptions -Wall -o grtsh grtsh-grtshell.o -pthread  ../../library/grt-modules/source/.libs/libgrtmods.a ../../library/mysql-resultset/source/.libs/libgrtsqlrs.a ../../library/mysql-resultset/source/.libs/libsqlrs.a ../../library/sql-parser/source/.libs/libsqlparser.a ../../library/generic-runtime/source/.libs/libgrt.a ../../library/base-library/source/.libs/libmysqlx.a ../../library/utilities/source/.libs/libguiutil.a /usr/lib/libgthread-2.0.so /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so -lrt /usr/lib/libxml2.so -L/usr/lib/mysql /usr/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient_r.so -L/usr/lib -lz -lcrypt -lnsl -lm -lpthread -lssl -lcrypto /usr/lib/libpcre.so -llua -llualib /usr/lib/libexpat.so -luuid ../../library/generic-runtime/source/.libs/libgrttextui.a ../../library/generic-runtime/newt/libmnewt.a -lslang-utf8 -ltermcap -lncurses -ldl -lstdc++ -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/lib/mysql -Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/lib/mysql
/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.1.1/../../../../i686-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: cannot find -ltermcap

If I get time I will try and fix this, but for now it seems that my termcap patch was broken when moving it to a sed strip.
Comment 11 Sven Wegener gentoo-dev 2007-03-12 19:46:05 UTC
This should be fixed with dev-db/mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p10-r1, thanks for reporting!
Comment 12 Ildar Sharafutdinov 2008-02-24 17:07:49 UTC
There is the same error with mysql-gui-tools-5.0_p12-r2.ebuild.

USE="-administrator -query-browser workbench" emerge dev-db/mysql-gui-tools -v

says:

 * Please activate at least one of the following USE flags:
 * - administrator for MySQL Administrator
 * - query-browser for MySQL Query Browser
 * - workbench for MySQL Workbench
