Happens with
vmware-modules-1.0.0.15-r1 and
vmware-player-1.0.2.29634.

This is weird: on my other box it pops up the 'End User Agreement' window and freezes when clicking 'accept' on it.
Comment 2 Akos Ladanyi 2006-12-04 12:58:24 UTC
After deleting ~/.vmware on my first machine it works similarly to my second one. Vmplayer pops up the license agreement window, and freezes when clicking accept. But it works when I run it as root.
Comment 3 Martin Smith 2006-12-12 18:37:18 UTC
Appears to be a duplicate of bug #157633.

According to http://forums.gentoo.org//viewtopic-t-512688-highlight-vmplayer.html, running vmplayer with an argument of the location of the VMX file you want to use will allow you to run as non-root.
Comment 4 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-12-13 01:58:06 UTC
I don't think these are the same problem. One appears to be due to a lack of files, or difficultly loading up png files. This bug seems to be about vmware-player freezing on startup. I run vmware without problems, but still get the libpng warning message, so that warning isn't necessarily the cause of the hang...

The forum thread that you pointed out also suggests that it could be related to the dbus issue (bug 155450). For the time being though, we'll leave this bug as is. Thanks for the extra info though... 5:)
Comment 5 Akos Ladanyi 2006-12-13 05:42:48 UTC
Upgrading to dbus 1.x fixed this for me (I'm the reporter), so this is really a dupe of Bug 155450 and Bug 157633. Turns out that the lockup had nothing to do with those warnings.

Comment 7 Paul Austin 2006-12-13 08:43:04 UTC
This bug is not a duplicate, the original problems I had was running as root and they were due to missing files. I found the .desktop file so that part is not an issue.

When running not as root I do notice the hang issue mentioned here when I ran it without a VM argument.

Please try out 1.0.3, which is now in portage.
