Description Richard Scott 2006-09-14 15:53:08 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #147274 +++

EDIT AFTER CLONE: Please note, this bug is ReiserFS 3.6 and NOT ReiserFS 4. if you are having problems with ReiserFS4, please do not add to this bug as it will not be investigated.

--- Original Bug Report Below ---

I have upgraded my system to use sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.4-r7 and it hangs my server after a random period of time. Daemons just die and refuse to die or restart :-(

An example of the daemons that hang are: postfix, amavisd-new, bind, mysql...the list goes on! :-(

Before you blame the daemons, when I downgrade to baselayout-1.11.15-r3 and run etc-update and reboot all is fine.

What can I do to help you guys trouble shoot this one?

EDIT: There are no errors or problems reported in the logs that I could see. The daemons were either hanging or taking so long to respond that the clients timed out i.e. postfix passing an email to amavisd-new timed out, or connecting vi SSH timed out or logging into the console timed out.

My emerge --info is as follows:

Comment 1 Peter Hyman 2006-09-19 03:11:57 UTC
Well? A non-reiser4 user had commented that he found that glibc-2.4 was the problem, and that backporting to glibc-2.3.6 solved the problem. However, people with both gcc 3.6.x and 4.1.1 have the problem. Are there any speedups which are attempted in the new baselayout that differ significantly to 1.11.15?
Comment 2 Richard Scott 2006-09-19 03:15:25 UTC
I've got the problem on the following system:

Portage 2.1.1 (hardened/x86/2.6, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.3.6-r4, 2.6.16-hardened-r11 i686)

backported to reiserfs for / and upped baselayout to 1.12.5. No problems now. R4 is definitely screwed as the system either starts or shutsdown. FWIW here's my emerge --info. Wonder whether having the hardened kernel makes any diff?

I'm having the same problem.
I have discussed about it in this post: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3639409.html.
My baselayout v. is 1.12.5-r2.
Here is my emerge --info:

I'm still getting this with sys-apps/baselayout-1.12.6?
Comment 6 Ville Aakko 2006-11-27 13:08:12 UTC
I am experiencing this bug, too, possibly. At least my shutdown sequence now hangs every time at the same point (after syncing hardware clock with software, can't copy+paste it here for obvious reasons), starting today.

I have nothing "extra" in my Kernel, apart from DVB modules from v4l-cvs I've been using for ages and the proprietary nvidia driver.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This might be off-topic, but I'll tell this here because it started happening exactly at the same time, so maybe it is related (though I don't see how it could be):

My em8300 module stopped receiving the module parameter 'audio_driver=oss'. It's as if /etc/init.d/modules is broken, too, somehow. Previously it worked by just having 'em8300 audio_driver=oss' in '/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6', but that doesn't seem work anymore (em8300 gets loaded but without parameters). So, I also added 'options em8300 audio_driver=oss' to /etc/modules.d/em8300, but that made no difference. Now I need to manually 'rmmod em8300 && modprobe em8300 audio_driver=oss' at every reboot (in addition to /etc/init.d/vdr/restart).
Comment 7 Ville Aakko 2006-12-01 06:51:55 UTC
A little update: the problem with the kernel module resolved itself. Don't know why. But I'm still getting hung in shutdown.

This should be fixed in baselayout-1.13.0_alpha11. Re-open if you disagree.
