Description Lee Trager 2006-09-12 23:49:31 UTC
For some reason at random Firefox will display a part of a page or the entire page in a new window. What very odd about this is this new window is not a normal Firefox window its just a window displaying the page(no tool bar or anything) and if I close it by clicking the X all instances of Firefox crash. This happens to me at least once a day.

I took a screenshot of this happening to me a few min ago.
Comment 2 Anthony Parsons 2006-09-13 10:49:07 UTC
Also happened to me using mozilla-firefox-2.0_beta2 on a page with 2 frames. Both frames opened separate windows at the size they'd usually be on the page, apart from that it was the same thing as above. It's only happened that one time and I can't reproduce it.

I can't say I've had anything remotely close to this bug. Then again, I don't use AMD64. This seems to be the only two things in common that both Lee and Sannin mention.

Have the AMD64 people had any similar reports of this happening? Or any other thoughts to share?
Comment 5 Lee Trager 2006-09-25 10:55:01 UTC
While I don't use seamonkey that much it dosn't seem to happen with it, only Firefox.
Comment 6 Sannin 2006-09-26 10:49:25 UTC
It not arch-spesific bug. It was happening all the time with my previous gentoo installation (Gentoo x86)
Comment 7 Simon Stelling (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-26 12:35:19 UTC
Sannin, thanks for clearing the situation up :)
Comment 8 Sannin 2006-10-04 11:19:09 UTC
Hey, it' s my duty! :)

About the bug, i don' t even know if it is mozilla-spesific. If i remember correctly i had the same problem with epiphany (built with USE="firefox"), so i wonder if it has something to do with gecko.

Since i' m new to bugzilla i have a question! How long does it usually take for a bug to be resolved?

Depends on the bug. A simple bug like a spelling error or a quick code fix probably a few days. Something like this where no one has a clue about why its happening could take months.
Comment 10 Stuart Longland (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-10-16 06:02:08 UTC
It'll take even longer if none of us (developers) can reproduce it.

I personally have never seen it happen on any release of Mozilla. And I've been using Mozilla since Milestone 15.
Comment 11 Lee Trager 2006-10-16 10:49:38 UTC
Well as I said it only happens on Firefox on my amd64 machine. IT doesnt happen on my Thinkpad, my dads amd64, or my girl friends x86. So it seems to happen very rarely on random machines. If you want some extra information I'll be happy to post it.
Comment 12 Jory A. Pratt 2006-10-16 17:20:11 UTC
I have read this whole bug report and see no mention of you moving the profile (i.e $HOME/.mozilla) out of the way and testing with a clean profile. I am unable to reproduce this error.
Comment 13 Sannin 2006-10-21 19:12:43 UTC
I am not using the default profile. I' ve switched to a new and clean profile but i saw no difference...

Could you build up firefox without -msse3 support and see if it resolves the problem please.
Comment 15 Sannin 2006-10-26 18:28:58 UTC
I have no problem doing that, but i had the same problem with my i686 gentoo installation with minimal optimizations (-march=athlox-xp -O2 -pipe)...
Comment 16 Sannin 2006-11-24 04:10:51 UTC
Some problem with mozilla-firefox-2.0-r1...

Fortunatelly, firefox 2 has the "restore previous session" feature, so no damage done from the crash.
Comment 17 Christophe 2006-11-27 18:41:12 UTC
Same problem. It looks like it open some frame in separate windows. Using back button from the main frame (if still visible) makes windows disappear as normal navigation would. Closing unnamed window kill firefox.

But once firefox is "bugged", it keeps happening even on other sites, until firefox is restarted.

No more clue on what start it.

amd64 here. Happen on my two computers. Using mozilla-firefox-2.0.

I confirm the bug (firefox 2.0.0.1) What kind of additional info can I provide?

Looks like the same bug is reported at Ubuntu launchpad:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/19552
Comment 21 Lee Trager 2007-01-24 21:56:45 UTC
So does this mean its upstream? If it is which project? Firefox, GTK, etc
Comment 22 Serge Gavrilov 2007-02-19 21:21:21 UTC
I have discovered a workaround for this bug. When new abnormal window appears, you must close the NEW TAB, which is also appears. After this, do not try to open in new tab the same link, just do something else before. In this case you can continue to work with firefox until the next time when abnormal window will appear :)
Comment 23 Serge Gavrilov 2007-03-26 07:05:36 UTC
Two weeks ago I recompiled my firefox with +moznopango. After that time the bug disappeared, though before it had happened almost every day. So, I believe the bug
is related with mozilla-pango interaction.
