emerge --sync is the first thing I did.

Sorry I could not, because emerge --sync is only suppose to be used once a day.
 However, I did run it this morning after seeing this and the error has been
fixed.  Here is the sequence of commands I ran last night:

emerge --sync
emerge --update --deep world
emerge --update portage
emerge --update --deep world
emerge --update --deep world --resume --skip-first
emerge --update --deep world --resume --skip-first
emerge --update --deep world --resume --skip-first
...
emerge net-wireless/wpa_supplicant
emerge net-wireless/wpa_supplicant 2>>/var/log/build.errs/wpa_supplicant.log
...

I actually ran into 8 separate packages with problems, which I submitted first
thing this morning.
