Ebuild works prefectly on amd64. I also edited the x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1 ebuild and got rid of the nvidia driver blocks in the RDEPEND ("!media-video/nvidia-glx", "!x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers", and "!x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers") and added back the video_cards_nvidia to the IUSE_VIDEO_CARDS and xorg 7.1 successfully emerged and runs. Everything seems to run fine.
Comment 7 Kris Kersey (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-24 22:24:05 UTC
I have committed the new nvidia-drivers and nvidia-legacy-drivers ebuilds. I am testing xorg-server with the new driver. I will close this bug as soon as I commit that change as well.

I have tested the new nvidia-drivers-1.0.8774 and I can confirm that they don't cause problems in combination with xorg-server-1.1.1.

Stop moaning. If you care so much, edit it yourself, emerge and test it and report if it works. I just did and it works great w/ xorg 7.1 (my emerge --info is in comment 11).
Comment 15 Henning Rogge 2006-08-25 10:29:03 UTC
I just changed the nvidia-driver-1.0.8774 and the xorg-server-1.1.1 ebuild and they work without problems.

In combination with XGL I have a keyboard problem (AltGr is not working), but I think this is XGL related.
Comment 16 Philip Kovacs 2006-08-25 12:05:34 UTC
i installed 8774 here on x86 with xorg-server-1.1.1. xvideo and composite are both working. i did get some gentoo QA warnings about textrels as the module was built, but it's working.

Comment 18 Philip Kovacs 2006-08-25 17:42:47 UTC
btw i notice you must also overlay xorg-server-1.1.1 and remove the blocker to nvidia-drivers, i.e. the two ebuilds mutually block each other. you can install nvidia-drivers-8774 if you just overlay that ebuild and remove the blocker to xorg-server-1.1.1, *but*, you will still see the block when you emerge -DNu world.

There are two ebuild to overlay, nvidia-drivers-8774 and xorg-server-1.1.1.
Comment 19 dongxu li 2006-08-25 19:04:35 UTC
Any reason to make nvidia-driver/xorg-1.1 block each other?

they work properly for me, but I still have to edit to ebuilds to remove the blockers.

Seems to work fine here as well.

Sigh what? Explain what Comment #7 meant in respect to that.

Current status with current tree updated within last day:

$ ACCEPT_KEYWORDS='~x86' emerge -p nvidia-drivers

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies ... done!
[blocks B     ] >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99 (is blocking x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8774)
[ebuild N ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8774 USE="dlloader"
$

Since this is what we've been waiting for, and the changes have been committed, what is it that I am missing? Ok, so I need to use ~x86 AND remove the block. Why both?
Comment 25 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-26 05:33:50 UTC
Jakub sighed because he had hoped comment #7 made it clear that although nvidia state that this driver should all work fine with xorg 7.1, that's not certain and we need to have people test the drivers first. So, keeping safety in mind, the blocks have stayed in place from the previous version until enough people report that it works ok and it's been deemed fully tested. It's a form of Quality Assurance.

This means that if it does/did break spectacularly, the people who'd be affected are only the small number who consciously took the effort of unblocking the packages, rather than having it break for everybody. So please, be patient for a few more days, and once it's clear that nobody's having any problems with the drivers, the blocks will be removed...

To clear things, is it really neccesary and right to uncomment that line in xorg-server-1.1.1.ebuild? I am wondering, becouse video_cards_nvidia is commented also in xorg-server-1.1.0-r1.ebuild. Thanks

I've edited ebuild myself (removed xorg-server-1.0 dep), everything seems working fine (FireFox, glxgears etc).
Now I will try to run XGL.
Comment 29 Brad Allen 2006-08-26 06:26:51 UTC
I had to unblock and add keywords; I did unblock in xorg-server and nvidia-driver.

Wow! I am amazed how much better everythinig is running!

First, the system returned to normal unbogged speed; there was some weird slowdown for many months that I couldn't explain. However, now that I installed 8774, it seems better right now. Was there some sort of kernel or hardware interrupt inefficiency in incompatible NVIDIA driver and X versions?

Second, the disappearing text problem that plagued me for many months (seems like a year?) has finally vanished! The most recent problem I had is that it wouldn't appear in a commercial program CrossOver I think based partly in Wine (Stargate SG-1 announced today that it is available in iTunes, so I wanted to look up its price, and to do that, one needs iTunes, and CrossOver is one necessary component to get iTunes to work in Linux).

Third, the following programs are tested and working great:

+ GoogleEarth 4.0.1693 (beta)
+ Opera 9.00 build 344
+ Mplayer 1.0pre8-4.1.1 with -vo x11 and -vo xv, but not -vo xvmc (a problem I've been having for a long time; seems application related, not driver related, but I haven't diagnosed at all)
+ Xine v0.99.4
+ SeaMonkey 1.0.3
+ YouTube SeaMonkey Macromedia Flash Player 7: worked (wow, I had no idea Cruzio.Com (Santa Cruz, California's local ISP) DNS servers blocked YouTube, Myspace, and iTunes content! (Accidental secondary DSL settings removed; primary Sonic.net settings restored and everything working fine :) )
+ MySpace: Worked, including some music pages.
+ Azureus 2.5.0.0: Worked.
- Current CrossOver demo with iTunes 4.9: after pounding at it for a while, it failed while using ratpoison, so I'm going to try lwm (not known to previously work with ratpoison, so not a problem yet).
+ Ratpoison: working great as usual.

I use mildly aggressive CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf (GCC 4.1.1, with some of the recommended aggressive CFLAGS, with stuff in /etc/portage to make that work right).

> Jakub sighed because he had hoped comment #7 made it clear that although nvidia state that this driver should all work fine with xorg 7.1, that's not certain and we need to have people test the drivers first.

I did emerge -p xorg-server and emerge -p x11, and I found out I have
xorg-server-1.1.1 and x11-7.0-r2.

Am I running xorg 7.1?

> So, keeping safety in mind, the blocks have stayed in place from the previous version until enough people report that it works ok and it's been deemed fully tested. It's a form of Quality Assurance.

There are many of us who may have totally forgotten about this because the current combination of blocks was impossible for our situation so we already have them removed, so any new non-keyword type blocks (which is how this manifested since emerging nvidia-drivers didn't work because of blocks) were confusing since this is clearly a better situation than the one we were currently using. That is why a simple "sigh" and obtuse reference to "comment #7" was plenty confusing. Thank you for explaining. It certainly makes it clear what we're referring to. (I also grew up with properly structured tree message systems, so I have a feeling flat message systems like this aren't that obvious to me; what message set A are we to assume message set B assumes is correct and/or being referred to without proper tree structures? That's why USENET originally invented quoting.

> This means that if it does/did break spectacularly, the people who'd be
> affected are only the small number who consciously took the effort of

Of course, with this I agree, and now that I understand and am reminded of the history of the situation, I can see how this led to my confusion.

> So please, be patient for a few more days, and once it's clear that nobody's having any problems with the drivers, the blocks will be removed...

Of course, which is wonderful news in what it represents.

Thank you.

Now, to test CrossOver with lwm ...

Xorg 7.1 is any xorg module/ebuild that is 1.1.x which is why 1.1.0-r1 also has it commented out.

works here, but as I mentioned in a dupe, the driver seems to not switch resolutions well, I am running at 1280x1024 on the desktop, and unless I choose 3d applications to run at 1280x1024, the drivers do not resize and instead appear in weird spots on the monitor. glxgears also looks strange before I resize and/or move the window it is running in.

Other then that everything seems fine, I am not seeing any text artifacts with RenderAccel like I have seen in the past. The card is a GeForce FX 5700 Ultra (GDDR-II edition.)

Blocking in RDEPEND is stupid, if you wanted time to test the drivers, block with a keyword or hardmask so people interested in testing only have to add to an unmask or keywords file.

With xrandr i can change the resolution. I think you are right, though it worked with 7.0 and the latest nvidia-kernel.

Since I have received so much good feedback on this, I will commit the changes to xorg-server-1.1.1 tonight. That will make it easy for people to test futher.

Work great!

Comment 44 Chris Brennan 2006-08-28 12:58:35 UTC
I'm a bit new to ebuild. I'd like to test these drivers as well as it appears they do work. But I am unsure what to edit in the two ebuild files .... Could someone give me a slight helping hand and clue me in.
Comment 45 Kris Kersey (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-28 13:17:32 UTC
Seems like someone beat me to the check-in. Anyways, xorg-server and the two nvidia ebuilds should allow the new drivers and X to play well.
