Description Vlastimil Babka (Caster) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-19 16:16:08 UTC
This is what I get after updating svgalib 1.9.21-r1 to 1.9.24 (which got recently x86 stable without any word in changelog, huh?):

WARNING: /etc/modprobe.conf line 216: ignoring bad line starting with 'probeall'

Happens on each modprobe command, that means a lot during boot... This line is coming from /etc/modules.d/svgalib_helper. I'm not sure why this happened only after svgalib update because all svgalib versions ebuilds I see contain this line:

MODULESD_SVGALIB_HELPER_ADDITIONS="probeall  /dev/svga  svgalib_helper"

which seems like the cause... some command modprobe doesn't understand. My modprobe is from sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.2.1. Tried updating to latest 3.2.2-r1 to see if probeall is some new command, but warning was the same...

No it's not a dupe of that bug. I've read that bug before submitting this one. It's true they mention the same warning there, but point of that bug is that the module won't load at all, with FATAL error. Which got fixed there, the module will load here, but the warning remains. You may say it's just a warning, but as it makes the probeall line ignored, I don't think that's the desired behavior.

Been looking more into this, seems svgalib is not at fault, it was something wrong with modules-update during emerge, which somehow generated modprobe.conf in a way it was containing stuff that belongs in modules.conf but not modprobe.conf...
I did rerun modules-update before manually but apparently it did nothing because generated files were already newer. Now after forcing regeneration the problem is gone. So something happened with modules-update but I cannot reproduce it and it's not svgalib fault anyway, sorry.
