Description James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2006-05-04 16:44:08 UTC
I updated my system (410 packages!!) and suddenly, the text in all my GTK apps (Gaim, ROX, Eclipse...) started disappearing. It seems as though all the words after the first word in any text area are disappearing. They usually reappear if you hover over them or click on them. Because so many packages were updated, it's hard to say what caused this but I've discovered that it only seems to affect some of the artwiz-aleczapka fonts. I was using "snap" before. It seems to affect others such as "nu". I have now switched to "drift" and that's working okay. It doesn't seem to affect any non-artwiz fonts. If you check out the URL, you will see that I'm possibly not the only one experiencing this, though they are yet to confirm which font they are using. I'm running an up-to-date ~x86 system so that should tell you which package versions I have. After seeing a similar bug affecting nvidia users, I tried updating xorg-server from 1.0.2-r3 to 1.0.2-r4 but that had no effect. I'm using the Geramik theme engine but I've tried others and that didn't fix it.

I'm sure that happened since you upgraded cairo-1.0.2 to 1.0.4. :)

I already filled a bug report upstream, have a look:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6617

Try using cairo-1.0.2 until they fix this.

James Le Cuirot,

1) Is this still happening to you?
2) Does it only affect text areas?

Now i only have one app (sylpheed-claws) affected by this. I dont know why...
Comment 3 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2006-07-12 02:30:56 UTC
I haven't changed my system much so yes, it is still happening to me, and in all apps, not just Sylpheed-Claws. I have been following the bug on fd.org. It seems like quite a tricky one! I'm not sure what you mean by "text areas" but I see it happening in menus among other places if that answers your question.
Comment 4 Sérgio Luís 2006-07-12 05:48:08 UTC
I was talking about the text areas you refered in comment #1
Comment 5 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2006-07-12 05:51:58 UTC
Ah right! I meant any line of text at all really.

testcase

can you run this test?

Instructions:

1 - run it: python test.py
2 - maximize the window
3 - scroll up and down with your mouse wheel

Does it get corrupted?
With pageUp pageDown instead of the mouse it doesnt get corrupted, right?
Comment 7 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2006-07-12 07:12:04 UTC
When the window initially appears, most of the text is missing. When I maximize it, this is still the case. Scrolling with the mouse wheel or page up/down does not make any of it appear. Each row of text only fully appears when I either move the mouse over it or select it using the arrow keys.

That's generally how it is behaving though in reality, it seems a little more random than that. For example, after moving over a row with the mouse and making it appear, if I then left click, sometimes the text remains and sometimes it disappears again.
Comment 8 Sérgio Luís 2006-07-12 07:46:03 UTC
Mine's a little better, only mouse scrols make it disappear. I'm glad yours is that bad :) cause i'm sending this test to upstream and i hope they can reproduce it.

Good news, the bug is fixed upstream.

It would be nice if the fix got included in cairo-1.0.4-r1, the author (cworth) said he could release a 1.0.6 version with this fix if we wanted.

IMHO, i prefer 1.0.4-r1 since it's only one change.

I guess this can be closed now.
