Description Robert Millan 2006-04-30 10:11:56 UTC
Here's a patch to add locale for Valencian (southern Catalan).

Note that this locale is almost the same as ca_ES@euro. The point of having
a separate locale is only for PO translations, which have a lot of social
support and are very appreciated by the Valencian-speaking community.

This should really go upstream instead...
Comment 3 Robert Millan 2006-04-30 11:47:35 UTC
Upstream didn't want it (they said that adding locales is expensive).

We're merging the base support for this locale in distros instead. It is being sent to OpenSuSE, Mandriva, etc. Already integrated in Debian and Ubuntu. I think Gentoo should have it as well.

Thanks

what upstream did you contact ?
Comment 5 Robert Millan 2006-04-30 23:28:58 UTC
I contacted the Glibc maintainers via bugzilla; Drepper rejected my request arguing that adding locales is expensive.

Please note that Glibc maintainers are very conservative with regard to locales. It is not unusual that some locales are not accepted and have to be applied somewhere else. This doesn't mean there's a problem with the locale or something (Debian and Ubuntu didn't have any objection with it).

Nevertheless, we're already working on new translations to this locale. Since it's going to be present in software you're already packaging, by adding this locale to your Glibc it'll allow your users to enable these translations, at the minimal cost of ~4 KB.

Is adding a symlink a good alternative?

Robert, which distros are supporting this locale?

It's not optimal because it loses some information (like title or category), but it works. I certainly prefer if you added this symlink than having none at all.

That I know of, Debian, Ubuntu and Mandriva.
Comment 8 Robert Millan 2007-07-08 15:41:35 UTC
Ah, note that if you add the symlink, the change in SUPPORTED is still necessary.

added to glibc-2.6 ... please re-open if what i included isnt sufficient
