Description Xake 2006-01-15 05:02:52 UTC
One day when I started my system (no, I can't remember doing any changes more then maybe update some packages) I started to have one nice problem.
Shortly after the gnome-splash-screen starts to show I've got a window telling me that the settings-deamon (don't know the exact name, translating from my language) failed to start and was restarted to many times (this both with my old user-profile and a clean user-profile). It also tells me that the childprocess did not give any errormessages.
After that my desktop comes up but without showing any backgound-picture nor icons exept the ones generated by totem-thumbnail. The buttons also follows default look and not the one I have specified.

However open xnest and loggin in in any of these two users there starts up the desktop without any problems.

So shortly: logging in with gdm into the xserver and gconf does not seems to work.
logging in with gdm in xnest and everything works as it should.

If there is anything more you need from me, just ask.

I have gnome-2.12 and xorg-7.0 and have done several emerge -e world to see if that fixes it.

I had some fun:

Going from xorg-x11-7.0 to latest stable (xorg-x11-6.8.2-r6) fixed this, so apparently it has something to do with the use of modular X. I am going to investigate futher.

And it is fully reproducable on my system nowdays, both in x86 and ~x86 (going to modular from stable and back several times) but I have run gnome earlier with modular without any problem.
