I started to merge gnome with ~x86 keyword on a fairly fresh system. I had previously merged X, fluxbox, and basic system utilities. I ran into trouble during the gnome panel 2.12.2 merge, with an error regarding the lack of the libxml2 module. I merged libxml2 on it's own with the ~x86 keyword still enabled and then restarted the gnome merge. Everything seems to be OK so far with libxml2 installed. Hope this helps.
gnome-panel doesn't directly depend on libxml2. Probably some dependency run into that problem, which means that that package should be fixed, and not gnome-panel. Could you please provide the complete output from the emerge cycle, or point out which package was being processed when it stopped? Thanks.
