Since it is possible to use WIPE_TMP="yes" in /etc/conf.d/bootmisc, KDE won't start if /tmp/.ICE-unix isn't owned by root and chmod'ed to 1777. If this directory isn't present, KDE creates it, but only with permissions of the user, try to logging in. KDE started in safemode says, that this directory must be owned by root and have to chmod'ed to 1777. If not, KDE hangs at "Initializing peripherals". I can't remember this behavior in earlier releases. Is it a bug or a feature? :-) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. /etc/init.d/xdm stop 2. rm -Rf /tmp/* 3. /etc/init.d/xdm start 4. try to log in as user Actual Results: KDE hangs at "Initializing peripherals". Expected Results: It should finish the login process.
Please add your emerge info output. I'm using WIPE_TMP="yes" and I have no problem at all...
Does KDE creates that directory with the right permissions and user if it is not present and u try to login as user? emerge info says: Portage 2.0.51.22-r3 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.3.6, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.14-gentoo-r2-meik.org i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.14-gentoo-r2-meik.org i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1600+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -Os -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -Os -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.wh2.tu-dresden.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo ftp://ftp6.uni-muenster.de/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo http://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" LINGUAS="de" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.de.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 3dnow 3dnowext X aalib acpi acpi4linux alsa arts audiofile avi bash-completion bluetooth bzip2 cpudetection crypt cups dmx dvd dvdr dvdread expat fam foomaticdb ftp gd gdbm gif gpm gtk gtk2 icq idn imlib imlib2 jabber jp2 jpeg jpeg2k kde lcms libg++ libgda lm_sensors logitech-mouse mad mbox mmx mmxext mng mp3 mpeg mpeg2 mpeg4 mplayer ncurses net nls nocardbus nvidia opengl oss pam pcre pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline real sdl slang sse ssl sysfs tiff udev unicode usb v4l v4l2 win32codecs xine xml xml2 xmms xosd xpm xsl xv xvid zlib linguas_de userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY
Nah, seems like the bug in baselayout was fixed in later versions.
