Description Surakshan Mendis 2005-10-06 04:43:02 UTC
This is not the same as bug #107784 which is related to removeable drives which
I'm not having problems with that.

I'm on Gnome 2.12,
sys-apps/pmount-0.9.3-r3
sys-apps/hal-0.5.4
sys-fs/udev-068-r1
gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager-1.5.1

The problem is in "Computer", or in the new GTK File SAVE/OPEN dialog my data
partitions do not appear (they did in gnome 2.10). They are mounted however just
not seen from the mentioned places. This makes saving and opening data a longer
process since one has to navigate "filesystem" to the desired mount point.

This issue only presents it self when HAL is started, the icons appear when HAL
is NOT started but then automounting and other goodies don't work.

When I click on Computer I see, Floppy, CDROM, DVDROM, Network, FileSystem
I don't see the data partitions which I did see in previous releases of gnome

When I plug in removeable drives it their icons appear...
Below is the fstab entries for the partitions that don't appear.

# 200GB disk
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/vdata reiserfs
user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 0
/dev/hdb3 /mnt/massdata reiserfs
user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 0

# 200GB sata
/dev/sda1 /mnt/massdata2 reiserfs
user,noatime,notail,user_xattr 0 2
/dev/sda2 /mnt/spd ext3 user,noatime,user_xattr
        0 2

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Gnome 2.12 emerged with HAL useflag
2. Make sure HAL is running

Actual Results:
Some partitions do not appear in Computer, and GTK file open/save dialog

Expected Results:
Partition icons to appear

line wrapping has mangled my fstab sample, but it should be easy to understand
Comment 2 Jazz 2005-10-06 07:29:13 UTC
i have the same problem, except that i dont even get any icons for any removable
drives i insert !

Everything works fine with gnome 2.10

Thanx,
Jazz

The lack of removable drives is probably either not being in the plugdev group
or not running gnome-volume-manager.

I don't see mount-point icons either, but I don't know if I saw them in 2.10,
nor if they're intended to show up. I would guess they're not supposed to be
there, but I'm looking further.

After further experimentation, it appears that icons appear for mountpoints in
/media, but not elsewhere. You'd think that /mnt would appear as well, but that
does not happen.

Is this a bug or feature, are you in contact with upstream?

I have the same problem.. I setup my partitions manually in fstab and they get
automounted , but the icons never show up anywhere in gnome, removable drives
work just fine. If I turn off hal the partitions show up and work perfectly, but
the removeable drives disappear.

I already am in the plugdev, and the haldaemon group.., that dosent help too
much,.

Also, i was referencing to the mount points automatically created in the /media,
for the removable drives which do not happen anymore..

I used to get a usb-drive icon in the My Computer whenever i used to plugin my
usb stick, and upon clicking it, it would get mounted in /media..

But that behaviour is not happening anymore !

I hope i make the problem a bit clear now.
Thanx,
Jazz

Ok, i just found out that downgrading from UDEV-070 or udev-068 to udev-58,
solves the problem with the icons of removable media not showing up in the My
Computer in Gnome-2.12 ;

But still the rest of the mounted drives from /mnt do not show up in My Computer
! i bet thats something to do with hal..

Thanx,
Jazz

Comment 10 Jason Oliveira 2005-11-12 22:23:22 UTC
this should NOT have been resolved as a duplicate. if one would have read the
first entry, they would have seen the nice message stating that "This is not the
same as bug #107784 which is related to removeable drives"

bug is NOT fixed.
Comment 11 Surakshan Mendis 2005-11-12 23:24:07 UTC
may be it should be opened again, there's a wide range of issues with
hald/gnome-vfs etc... EVEN if the cause turns out to be the same I think this
bug should be independant
Comment 12 Surakshan Mendis 2005-11-12 23:28:50 UTC
I'm marking as a dupe again, I don't want to start a flame war.
#107784 does have "similiar issues" in the title so I'll let that one progress
