I think I have the same problem - ass subtitles in mkv container, Mplayer and Mplayer2 crash. Thanks, updated libass to 0.9.13 and Mplayer2 started normally play the files. Both computers are x86. For fun, decided to test the second computer, where the problem is not noticed. Install libass-0.9.12, avi file, and external subtitles ass - mplayer2 randomly crash.
