Default textclass is used but LyX may not be able to work properly. Please reconfigure again if needed. is what it says when I do that. do you have enabled latex use flag, ie installed texlive? i reread your initial message, so no you dont have latex installed. then its true what lyx says. you will be able to edit file, but you can not typeset which is natural when you dont want latex installed. Hadn't noticed the latex use flag on lyx before. IIUYC then without it Lyx isn't very useful. you may want only edit file without pulling the whole tex tree. on the other hand you are right that latex should be recommended by default.
