I believe the ebuilds of biopython should specify which python versions they require. biopython-1.50 is the last requiring python-2.3 and above biopython-1.51 (beta is out already) will require python-2.4 at least biopython-1.50 should have already been in the tree for a long while, remote database APIs are changing quickly so it is not useful to run 1.49. For me access to pubmed is unusable with 1.49 through efetch. :( Just stabilize 1.49 and let's move to 1.50.
