mike, was able to reproduce this & confirm the above fixes it... can commit it if you ack, one-liner epatch line to ebuild
hmm, that's an old version of my lang patch. the QA website should be updated to use the one from binutils: /usr/portage/sys-devel/binutils/files/binutils-configure-LANG.patch feel free to commit one like that to zlib ...

Reopening. Mike, OK to replace the patch in Portage with this?
