Description Rob 2010-02-10 22:27:07 UTC
kde-base/kmail-4.4.0 requires akonadi as a dependency. kmail will build, but will crash after 10 seconds when it cannot connect to akonadi, so it's essentially useless without it.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge kmail without kde-meta package (I used kdebase-startkde)
2. don't emerge akonadi
3. run kmail

Actual Results:
one can use kmail and check email for about 5-10 seconds, but a warning pops up and renders kmail unusable.

Expected Results:
kmail runs fine

make akonadi a dependency for kmail.

I can confirm this. If I manually emerge akonadi, then kmail runs fine, so it is a dep problem.

After re-emerging akonadi and kmail, kmail-4.0.0 still crashes while opening Inbox. Please attached file for detailed error messages.

Simon: Your problem is with Akonadi not starting, not with kmail.

run:
$ aknoaditray
and from the icon in the corner, use the gui to set up your akonadi-server

You will also need mysql installed as Akonadi currently uses it, which you should be able to notice from the config screen.

Accoding to this http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6167848.html Adding clucene and java use flag to soprano and restarting nepomuk fix the problem.

I did this and I successfully start kmail again

Could you please try the following:
end the KDE session, log into the console and delete the contents of ~./.local/share/akonadi/

This helped here to make kmail work, even without kde-base/akonadi installed.

I did run Akonadi configure. But no luck.

There are three errors pop up:

Akonadi control process not registered at D-Bus
Akonadi server process not registered at D-Bus
Nepomuk search service not registered at D-Bus

I'm sorry, I gave you the wrong direction. The error is fixed meanwhile in the KDE overlay as well as in portage. Please update your machine and the problem should be gone.
The solution I posted here was meant for a different issue.
