Description Andy Neitzke 2009-06-22 00:28:30 UTC
After a recent round of updates, I now get the message

/bin/sh: warning: setlocale: LC_ALL: cannot change locale (en_US.UTF-8)

appearing many times during the boot process. It doesn't seem to cause any trouble, but it's rather ugly.

What looks like the same issue was also noted at

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=482888

where it was attributed to trying to set the locale with /usr not mounted. This seems consistent with my situation; I do have /usr on a separate partition, and the errors stop after the line "Mounting local filesystems..."
Comment 1 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-06-29 15:47:56 UTC
Please provide the output from "emerge --info", so that we can determine whether you're using baselayout-1 or baselayout-2/openrc...
Comment 2 Andy Neitzke 2009-06-29 15:56:43 UTC
Oops, sorry for the omission, here it is:

Ok, thanks for that. Given the redhat bug mentions that it appears to be an init script issue, and I can't recreate the situation because it requires a separate /usr paritition, I'm assigning this to the openrc guys...
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2009-06-29 20:48:40 UTC
how exactly are you setting your locale ?
Comment 5 Iain Buchanan 2009-07-07 07:25:25 UTC
same issue for me. /usr on separate partition, messages disappear after "mounting local filesystems". I'm setting my locale from env.d. AFAIK I don't do anything with LANG or LC_ALL anywhere else.

$ cat /etc/env.d/02locale
LC_ALL="en_AU"
LANG="en_AU"

Hi There! :)
I've got the same problem here.

My emerge --info (it's a fresh gentoo install!)
I've also, as mentioned here, a seperate /usr partition.

Comment 7 Andy Neitzke 2009-07-07 17:17:08 UTC
In my case I think this was user error. It turned out that I had a reference to LC_ALL in my /etc/env.d/02locale, which apparently is no longer recommended according to

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/guide-localization.xml

Changing /etc/env.d/02locale to

LANG="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="C"

made these error messages go away.

ah, I removed LC_ALL and ran `env-update`, now these boot messages don't appear.

thanks!

does openrc have docs/FAQ to add this to ?

Aside from the man pages, OpenRC just has install documentation.
I would recommend adding it to the OpenRC migration guide.
Comment 11 William Hubbs gentoo-dev 2011-01-21 03:02:12 UTC
Robin,

can you put something about this in the migration guide?

Comment 12 Robin Johnson archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2011-04-08 19:35:56 UTC
Moving to openrc documentation tracker bug
Comment 13 David J Cozatt 2011-06-07 05:41:15 UTC
The document in comment #7 eplicitly warns against setting LC_ALL
This bug should just be closed imho
