Installing this, I was lead to the vmware site to manually download the package, part of the conditions that go with it, so it has a fetch restriction. The emerge of vmware-modules fails, this is on entering emerge vmware-workstation. make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.37-rc2' make[1]: warning: jobserver unavailable: using -j1. Having emerged it, I cannot get it to fire up. Between the various kernels I have and these packages not being updates, the emerge results in the vmware-workstation looking for kernel headers, not kernel source, that I should by rights have but it cannot identify the kernel headers offered to it. So; in summary, vmware-modules by itself has the latest version, vmware-workstation pulls in the outdated version of this package, vmware-workstation itself needs an ebuild for the current version which appears to have had a number of sub-updates since passing over the 6version 6.5.4.

Never mind. Got it. Turns out an old bug Bugzilla Bug 155450 pinned it down. Somewhere THE MESSAGE GOT LOST; vmplayer needs hald to be started. If nothing else out of this false alarm, please incorporate hald as a dependency and at least prompt on install to add hald to rc-update to start or restart om level 5.
