Description Tobias Heinlein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-26 22:41:54 UTC
CVE-2009-3765 (http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2009-3765):
mutt_ssl.c in mutt 1.5.19 and 1.5.20, when OpenSSL is used, does not
properly handle a '\0' character in a domain name in the subject's
Common Name (CN) field of an X.509 certificate, which allows
man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof arbitrary SSL servers via a
crafted certificate issued by a legitimate Certification Authority, a
  related issue to CVE-2009-2408.
Comment 1 Tobias Heinlein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-26 22:44:23 UTC
CVE-2009-3766 (http://nvd.nist.gov/nvd.cfm?cvename=CVE-2009-3766):
mutt_ssl.c in mutt 1.5.16, when OpenSSL is used, does not verify the
domain name in the subject's Common Name (CN) field of an X.509
certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL
servers via an arbitrary valid certificate.

Comment 2 Tobias Heinlein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2009-10-26 22:50:53 UTC
Maintainers, please provide a fixed ebuild.

Comment 3 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2009-10-27 09:10:42 UTC
versions 1.5.16 and 1.5.19-r1 dropped for this bug to reduce the problem to 1.5.20.

I have a little problem there: bug #290154. Solution there to force going forwards is to package.use.mask for all the arches that didn't have time to check tokyocabinet yet.

I will prepare mutt-1.5.20-r8 right now with the patch (if it applies at all)
Comment 4 Stefan Behte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev Security 2009-11-06 14:10:01 UTC
So mutt-1.5.20-r8 is OK for stabilizing now?
Comment 5 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2009-11-06 14:47:29 UTC
it's fine for stabilising with me (maintainer), we need to get bug #290154 resolved before though, which can be done quickly if security thinks this is important enough to just have the tokyocabinet USE-flag masked on arches which didn't have time to check yet.
Comment 6 Stefan Behte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev Security 2009-11-06 15:34:55 UTC
I asked, because the patch seemed problematic and you didn't write anything after #3. It only allows for mail interceptions, so I think we can wait for bug #290154.
With your advice I can add arches as soon as that bug is solved, thanks.
Comment 7 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2010-01-08 08:42:24 UTC
bug #290154 no longer blocks, sorry mips.

Stable target now is mutt-1.5.20-r10
Comment 8 Alex Legler (RETIRED) archtester gentoo-dev Security 2010-01-08 15:56:18 UTC
Arches, please test and mark stable:
=mail-client/mutt-1.5.20-r10
Target keywords : "alpha amd64 hppa ia64 ppc ppc64 sparc x86"
Comment 9 Brent Baude (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-01-08 19:33:14 UTC
ppc and ppc64 done
Comment 10 Andreas Schürch gentoo-dev 2010-01-09 00:33:29 UTC
everything seems to be alright in the x86 land also, even with USE=tokiocabinet, which used to be harder to enable before and theres no stablereq for dev-db/tokyocabinet yet!
Comment 11 Thomas Kahle (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2010-01-09 10:37:26 UTC
Looks good on x86. Several useflag-combis tested, sidebar tested, no mail eaten.
