The following problem recently proofed to affect at least some systems, after upgrading to gnome-2.10-r1, in the gentoo-users mailing list [see url]: When i click on the main-menu or menu-bar in the gnome panel the first time after system startup, i've to wait about 7s till it shows up. After that first delay, it works as expected. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emgerge gnome 2. reboot 3. click on the gnome main-menu/menu-bar Actual Results: I've to wait 7secs till the menu shows up. Expected Results: The menu should be opened immediatly. are you still having this problem?
Well, maybe the delay is now slightly shorter, as i use gnome-panel-2.10.2, but it's still there ...
I bet it's generating the menu only when you open it for the first time. That it takes so long might point at some slowdown in the generation somehow. Do you have any self created menu-items ? Does it also happen for another user (root) ?
It is just the same when i log in as another user. By the way, the delay i'm experiencing is about two seconds longer with the gnome main-menu then with the gnome menu-bar - which may not be that surprising. I didn't create any menu items myself so far, but a lot of programs did; here is what my panel writes to stdout when i start it directly from a terminal: Unable to open desktop file moe-00c42d35f9.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/moe-00c42d35f9.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file hammer-0029ce7c15.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/hammer-0029ce7c15.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file gegl-00c7ad53a3.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/gegl-00c7ad53a3.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file moe-00d71d8975.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/moe-00d71d8975.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file eek-0041d0de93.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/eek-0041d0de93.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file hammer-00c1769a63.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/hammer-00c1769a63.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file curly-00b18a9388.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/curly-00b18a9388.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file eek-00184521c3.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/eek-00184521c3.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file greasy-00d54b1a97.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/greasy-00d54b1a97.desktop': File not found Unable to open desktop file curly-00333ea95b.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'file:///home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/curly-00333ea95b.desktop': File not found

comment #4 indicates that xdg is looking for files that aren't accessible in your home dir. That could cause the slowdowns, those files you must somehow have generated yourself.
How can I tell xdb to stop looking after the files from comment #4, so that i can check if that is the reason for the slowdown ?
(In reply to comment #7) > How can I tell xdb to stop looking after the files from comment #4, so that i > can check if that is the reason for the slowdown ? Easiest way... move /home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/ to /home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers.broken and try again. :-)
Solution is in comment #8 - your local launchers are causing problems. Please reopen if moving them away doesn't fix it.
Well, sorry for my delayed response but: Moving /home/antonio/.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/ did nothing except than removing my custom app launchers on my panel - the slowdown with the main-menu still remains. However, I'm not reopening this bug as it still is possible that this problem has something to do with my system, although i've experienced that behavour on different, also newly installed, machines. As soon as gnome-2.12 gets stable, i'll check if this fixes the problem for me. If not, i'll consider reopening this bug.
fixed with 2.12.2
