Description Sebastian Bergmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-17 08:06:13 UTC
After running "emerge --newuse -Du world" today
media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6111-r2 stopped working.

Here is the output of genlop -l for the packages that were updated:

     Tue May 17 12:45:48 2005 >>> sys-devel/binutils-2.15.92.0.2-r9
     Tue May 17 12:48:05 2005 >>> sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r9
     Tue May 17 12:50:37 2005 >>> sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.12
     Tue May 17 12:51:33 2005 >>> net-misc/wget-1.9.1-r5

Comment 3 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2005-05-17 11:35:16 UTC
Same here, on amd64 (so this is not x86 specific) and latest nvidias (glx
1.0.7174-r4 and kernel 1.0.7174), except that it was a standard 'emerge
sync;emerge -auDt world'

I saw the problem when I rebooted (into 2.6.11-r9) but the kernel is not the
culprit, same problem with 2.6.11-r8 which was working fine before.

I'll check which of binutils or baselayout is responsible for it

Comment 4 Wojciech Milkowski 2005-05-17 12:42:18 UTC
It's related to baselayout-1.11.12. After downgrade to baselayout-1.11.11-r3 or
lower everything works again.
Comment 5 Matan Peled 2005-05-17 13:24:47 UTC
This is a duplicate of bug 92856...
that bug contains a workaround,
bug 92921 (which is also a dup) has the proper fix.

(But I don't have permissions to resolve them as such)
Comment 6 Bernard Cafarelli gentoo-dev 2005-05-17 13:30:56 UTC
Ok some more infos:
- binutils is definitively innocent, so this is baselayout's fault
- bugs #92905, #92921, #92856 and #92975 report this baselayout-1.11.12 bug
- video players like mplayer are also affected (they segfault)
- the problem is in /sbin/rc (line 263), change line:
try mount -n -t ${mntcmd} udev /dev -o noexec,nosuid,mode=0755
into
try mount -n -t ${mntcmd} udev /dev -o exec,nosuid,mode=0755
- glx works again, mplayer works again for me with this change
