Expected Results:
yep

i've searched and it seems like there's all sorts of problems with this package,
but none are exactly like what's happening here. no i don't have some
rediculous set of cflags or use flags.

Can you post emerge info and perl -V output? "Builds" (so to speak, it actually isn't that complicated a module) fine over here

Comment 2 John Newman 2005-05-16 09:40:40 UTC
no sorry i can't do that actually. i tried to emerge some other stuff and just got more errors. so i said the hell with this and wiped out gentoo.

but i do know i had reasonable cflags and use flags. i think i just had -02 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer and gtk gnome -qt -kde -cups ..

i've installed gentoo 4 times now (twice on my machine and on two friends) and i never had any problems whatsoever. i did the exact same thing i always have except this time i used 2005.0 instead of 2004.3
Comment 3 Michael Cummings (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-16 10:15:48 UTC
Does that mean we should just close this bug? (no way to debug the problem if you've already wiped the box)

Though I am curious why /dev/null is responding like a script and not a device node...
Comment 4 John Newman 2005-05-16 12:21:01 UTC
yeah go ahead and close it. it doesn't look like anyone else is having the same problem.

about the /dev/null

one thing that was really really strange: i did emerge system during install did all the other stuff necessary and rebooted. when it came up it said something like devfsd not found (i forget the exact message) and then it couldn't find the super block on my root partition. i had to boot the cd and chroot and emerge devfsd myself and everything worked.

sigh

thanks for all your hard work, gentoo is a great distro that does a lot of things wayyy better than anyone else (love the /etc directory) ... but these bizzare errors are a huge turnoff. i'll be back next year
Comment 5 Michael Cummings (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-05-17 02:07:47 UTC
John wiped the box, nothing left to fix :(
Comment 6 John Gerritse 2005-11-08 05:16:11 UTC
Happened to me too today! :-(

I have several Gentoo installs and this is the first time this ebuild fails on me.
