Description Jan Hrabe 2005-05-13 21:16:43 UTC
I don't need this utility that badly any more -- however, it doesn't seem to work. I have these modules loaded (and two ieee1934 devices working):

bash-2.05b$ lsmod
Module Size Used by
raw1394 26540 0
vmnet 28772 2
vmmon 167500 0
usb_storage 29696 0
ohci_hcd 19144 0
usbcore 106232 3 usb_storage,ohci_hcd
sbp2 21896 0
ohci1394 31684 0
ieee1394 94004 3 raw1394,sbp2,ohci1394
nvidia 3465916 12
3c59x 38760 0

The gscanbus 0.7.1 still complains:

erbelix root # gscanbus
couldn't get handle: No such file or directory
This probably means that you don't have raw1394 support in the kernel or that you haven't loaded the raw1394 module.

The kernel is 2.6.11-gentoo-r8 (SMP Athlon machine).

Do the needed devices exist? If not and you are using udev, I´d suggest that you either need to mknod them or have a look at Bug 87440.

You are right. The raw1394 module is loaded and registered in /sys but udev
does not create the /dev/raw1394 node for it. I have the latest stable release of udev installed (056) and there doesn't seem to be any relevant rule for ieee devices in /etc/udev/rules.d.

One small change in gscanbus could help though -- the error message should
perhaps complain about the device node and not about the module. But that's
for the gscanbus author, I guess.

Thanks for your quick and infomrative response to my report!

Reopening to resolve properly.
