The patch, I believe, is http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/2.6/2.6.11/2.6.11-ck7/patches/1g_lowmem1_i386.diff

IMO this will be of use for many configurations, and the patch is so simple it 
1) will not create any maintance overhead.
2) is minimal derivation from upstream.
