Description Cameron Blackwood 2005-04-25 19:25:31 UTC
http://gentoo-wiki.com/Kernel_Sources
needs updating rather a lot. Can you remove the old misleading text and make the "note:" bits official?

gentoo-sources:
"superceded by gentoo-dev-sources, and is going to be replaced by it very soon"
This suggests that g-s is going to go away and be replaced by g-dev-s. Infact you mean it to happen in the other direction.

"is based on the 2.4.x series of vanilla kernels.
"Note: Nowadays, gentoo-sources contains 2.6.x series kernels."
Misleading... can you just replace the text with the 'Note:' information? (Id the old stuff is important to keep, cant you mark it as 'old info'.

gentoo-dev-sources
"This is the kernel that most people will want to use."
except its not available as you note below.

"If you are currently using gentoo-sources, you should probably upgrade to this kernel."
:) except g-sources has replaced it, so infact you cant.

"Note: Nowadays, 2.6.x series kernels have gone into gentoo-sources"
Which said that g-dev-sources was going to replace it and that g-sources was going to be removed soon.

*BINGO* You didnt mean that g-d-s was going to superced g-s you ment that the old g-d-s was going to move into g-s! That supercedes and replace line is very misleading and suggests that g-s is going to be replaced/superceded, not that g-d-s is going to be superceded and removed.

"gentoo-dev-sources is not available at this moment."
Even though gentoo-sources says to use this one?

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. read document, as above.
Actual Results:
Im confused about which kernel to install... (not really, but the docs didnt
help me at all and if I hadnt already known, I would have been very confused
about which was replacing which)

Expected Results:
The docs should say:

g-sources: based on 2.6 kernel. Use this kernel.
g-dev-sources: old development tree. changes moved into g-s. g-d-s has been
removed.

I could mark this as minor, but I think new people coming to gentoo need all the
help they can get on kernel installs, so I actually think its a pretty major
thing.... and quick to fix too!!!

Ummm Gentoo Wiki isn't an Official Gentoo Project AFAIK. That means you're telling the wrong people :)

And more importantly, its a Wiki. Which means you can make these changes to the page yourself.

fox2mike is correct. the only docs for which we are responsible are on gentoo.org
