It appears that libmd.map does not get properly copied to the build directory by autoconf/automake or whatever is supposed to do that (not too familiar with ac/am). In the config.log there's this suspicious test failure however:

configure:13123: checking for --version-script linker flag
configure:13146: clang -o conftest -march=native -O2 -pipe -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -fuse-ld=lld -rtlib=compiler-rt -unwindlib=libunwind -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--version-script=conftest.map conftest.c >&5
ld.lld: error: version script assignment of 'global' to symbol 'symbol' failed: symbol not defined
clang-16: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)

No idea if this is related.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use clang-16-r2
2. emerge -av1 libmd

This might be because LD="ld.lld". We tend to suggest that folks set -fuse-ld in *FLAGS instead, as setting LD usually confuses older build systems, and in this case, libmd IIRC uses libtool in such a way that it breaks here.

But I might be confusing different bugs.

If you try CC=clang-15 instaed, I assume it works? Or no?

The LD="ld.lld" is set by default in profiles/features/llvm/make.defaults, with the comment "libtool needs this." Either way, I just tried setting LD="" in make.conf and it didn't make a difference.
Comment 6 Sam James archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2023-02-12 05:48:46 UTC
Thanks! I bet this is to do with some of the lld symbol version changes in 16 then.
Comment 7 Violet Purcell 2023-02-12 05:54:23 UTC
Literally just fixed it. The issue seems to have been caused by https://reviews.llvm.org/D135402. Adding -Wl,--undefined-version to LDFLAGS fixed it.
Comment 8 Sam James archtester Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev Security 2023-02-12 06:04:02 UTC
Could you report it upstream at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libbsd/libmd/-/issues? Then we can add the workaround for now until it's fixed upstream.
Comment 9 Violet Purcell 2023-02-12 06:04:57 UTC
Got it. Will do.
Comment 10 krismanmathers 2023-02-12 07:59:18 UTC
I also want to add, several dev-qt/ packages also have similar issue
What i tested so far:
dev-qt/qtgui
dev-qt/qtxml
dev-qt/qtsql

Please file separate bugs for those. We can't handle them all in one.
