This is related to 89143. You follow the prompts and it doesn't work. The response to 89143 was follow the handbook. I did but you still get to places where the commands generate errors and you can't go on. If you try to follow the emerge -pretend instructions this also gets to a place where it won't work any more. In the steps to reproduce I tell you what I did the first time. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1.live cd setup 2.get to 7.e. 3.try for ati drivers, get instructions. 4. These instructions: livecd linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r5 # emerge --pretend ati-drivers These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies ...done! I think the setup has put the files the command is looking somewhere but I don't know where. I AM following the instruction in order, but the stuff it needs is not where the instructor thinks it is, or is not there at all. Expected Results: When you follow the instructions it should continue with the install. I will try the attachment. I am ssh into the whitebox which is the target of the install from a MEPIS notebook. Both ar PII 400, the whitebox has 384 ram the notebook 296 ram. It I can't install gentoo in the first place I can't use it. It seems that following the instructions should get me there. I copy/paste the commands from the handbook or the prompts directly into the ssh console, there is no possibility of typo error.
Created attachment 56490 [details] Everything about this is klunky, I think that is the file in Kmail, but I can't tell I don't know if this process is compatible with Kmail or not. I have a full description in the drafts which has a *subject* but the subject doesn't show in the browse but rather this meaningless number. Is someone intentionally trying to make this more difficult than it has to be?
Docs Team: can you make any sense of this? I can't. It looks like he is trying to force the masked version of the ebuild to install, but I really am having a tough time following this.
The attachment gives some output on kernel compilation, but the prompt (livecd ~#) makes me wonder if you're chrooted or not. Also, is /usr/src/linux a symbolic link to the kernel source you are using?
Hi Pete, I almost missed your e-mail. So you're chrooted allright. What about the symlink? """ ~# ls -l /usr/src/linux """
Pete, please answer in the bugreport... Anyway, if the symlink is missing, you need to recreate it. See http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=7#doc_chap2 code listing 4. Make sure you are chrooted!!
