Description gentoo.bug.reports 2005-03-25 09:39:05 UTC
"Internal GStreamer error: pad problem. File a bug."

I, among other people apparently, receive this dialogue when using Rhythmbox. I have tried all of the steps listed on the reference URL to no avail. Some people in #gentoo-amd64 have reported no problems with GStreamer, but at least 3 others in the channel reported otherwise.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Rhythmbox or use GStreamer from the CLI
2. Attempt to play anything

Actual Results:
Error dialogue (or CLI message):

"Internal GStreamer error: pad problem. File a bug."

I am guessing that this affects anything built on GStreamer, which, in turn,
would make a handful of useful applications useless. :)

Expected Results:
Played the music with no error? :)

I am using snd-via82xx with ALSA support built into my kernel; Sound works
perfectly in other applications (i.e. XMMS).

What versions of gstreamer, gst-plugins and rhythmbox?

Also, please do something like epm-qa | grep gst-plugins and tell me what plugins you have installed.

I have an amd64 box and playback of files works without issue.

Comment 3 karim nassar 2005-04-13 13:13:21 UTC
Me too, and in answer to comment #2:

gstreamer-0.8.8
gst-plugins-0.8.7
rhythmbox-0.8.8-r1

root # locate gst-plugins | grep -v portage | grep -v "/var/db/pkg" | grep -v locale | grep -v ".gz"

/usr/share/doc/gst-plugins-ffmpeg-0.8.3
/usr/share/doc/gst-plugins-ogg-0.8.7
/usr/share/doc/gst-plugins-vorbis-0.8.7

I also have installed:

alsa-headers-1.0.8
gst-plugins-alsa-0.8.7-r1
alsa-lib-1.08
alsa-oss-1.0.8-r1
alsa-driver-1.0.8

I have sound support enabled in kernel (not module), all sound settings off.

Ok, from the command line do:

rhythmbox --gst-debug-level=5 &> rhythmbox.log

bzip2 the log and attach to this bug, form that I should be able to tell you whats wrong.

This is the error log I got trying to play a single song on rhythmbox.

I'm seeing this on my AMD64 system as well. A recent update seem to of broken
rhythmbox. Playback via Alsa on XMMS.

is it still apparent with gst-plugins 0.8.10 and alsa-lib 1.0.9 and kernel 2.6.12?
Comment 11 Jean-François Gagnon Laporte 2005-08-21 07:04:30 UTC
Since I'm now with this problem I might as well pitch in. I have an Athlon64 but
run it like an Athlon XP so gstreamer doesn't run in 64bit mode in my case.
xfMedia doesn't play songs at all it only tries and then skip to another one. On
the other hand, rhythmbox, that I've installed yesterday to try another player,
spew out the same error messages discussed here. FYI, this is still happening on
gst-plugins 0.8.10 and alsa-lib 1.0.9 and kernel 2.6.12
(gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r6 to be exact). If you need another log, just tell me.
In the mean time, here's my emerge info :

I don't know if this is related, but: Rhythmbox works just fine for me, but I
just masked the xine USE flag for totem to try it out with GStreamer (0.8.11).
Playing certain AVIs produces the same "pad problem" error, sometimes after a
couple of "Internal GStreamer error: negotiation problem. File a bug" error
dialogs; other AVIs just play.

Comment 14 Florian Engelhardt 2006-02-27 05:59:17 UTC
I have the same errors here with totem or bmpx using gstreamer as backend. Is someone still working on this bug?
Comment 15 Zaheer Abbas Merali (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-02-27 07:11:24 UTC
What is your audio sink set to in gconf (/system/gstreamer/0.8/default)

Also try gst-plugins 0.8.12 that has numerous alsa fixes.

Though 0.8 is not really maintained anymore as 0.10 is the current stable release upstream. However apps using 0.10 are not yet in portage.
Comment 16 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-01-11 21:14:33 UTC
is it still relevant with current gstreamer/totem/rhythmbox ?

It hasn't come up recently on my AMD64 Gentoo Stable.
Comment 18 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-06-28 06:12:51 UTC
Current stable rhythmbox/totem is using gstreamer 0.10.x; this bug is probably no more relevant.
