Hi,
don't beat me to death, if i am not the first suggestiong that, but when you 
install multiple packets, why doesn't portage start downloading the second 
package while compiling the first and so on? That would probably increase the 
install speed dramatically on big packets like X11. (you could just run a 
emerge --fetchonly package in ghe background)
