Can you post the full build.log? You can use xz -09 build.log to compress it. If you have time and motivation, could you try building 91.5.1 and/or 96.0.2? Please note that downgrading from 96 -> 91 could cause some profile issues so take a backup from your ~/.mozilla or don't at least launch it if you haven't.
Someone who hit this in #gentoo (tried to get to them to report it) mentioned it being tmpfs related.

So fast read-through there seems to be some sort of mismatch between /slow/tmp_portage/ and /var/tmp/portage/. Do you have some sort of package.env file for firefox? and yes if you can build 95 but not 96 it's most likely something in the ebuild, or in the way mozilla now handles system python.

I'll make a bug report for mozilla tomorrow - meanwhile try un-symlinking your /var/tmp/portage or do PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/slow/tmp_portage/" emerge -av firefox
PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/slow/tmp_portage/" in /etc/portage/make.conf solved the problem. Closing!
I'd still consider this bug valid. Trying to solve it with upstream but it may be Gentoo-specific, so might need some sort of a workaround over it.
