"emerge gimp-freetype-0.2" tries to run /usr/bin/gimptool as part of its
configuration. 
/usr/bin/gimptool doesn't exist - /usr/bin/gimptool-1.2 does.  Solution: symlink
gimptool -> gimptool-1.2 (worked for me) or modify gimp-freetype's configure
script to find gimptool-1.2.

this is fixed in gimp-1.2.3-r2.
