Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2021-11-10 09:38:05 UTC
I don't know why in one of my systems I am unable to update world without portage trying to downgrade glibc and co.

As I was getting unsolvable blockers, I used --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y as news item suggest:
https://www.gentoo.org/support/news-items/2021-10-18-libxcrypt-migration-stable.html

But, after that, I cannot run a normal emerge -vuDN world update:
# emerge -vuDNt world --jobs=2 --backtrack=10000

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

NOTE: Use the '--verbose-conflicts' option to display parents omitted above

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Thanks for the report!

1. Can you please try masking the old virtual :0/1?
2. Try the “with explicit reverse dependencies” option on the wiki page
2. Try —-verbose-conflicts. We want to know what’s on the 0/1 side and poke at them to see why Portage thinks they can’t be updated or rebuilt.

That worked!

Do you prefer me keeping the system in "broken state" for working on the issue or should I simply continue and "solve" it?

Thanks a lot
Comment 4 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2021-11-11 18:03:35 UTC
I see that setup failing to update cleanly are having crossover-bin installed, that depends on:
        || (
                sys-libs/glibc[crypt(+)]
                sys-libs/libxcrypt[compat]
        )

Surprisingly, if I do:
emerge --deselect crossover-bin

Later retry to update world... it goes fine. If I press Ctrl+C (i.e nothing is updated) and I do:
emerge --noreplace crossover-bin

And, finally, I re-run emerge -avuDN world... it still works fine :O

I mean, simply dropping crossover-bin from my world, re-running emerge, later re-adding it to the world, "solves" the issue :|

We should swap the order in that dependency, it reminds me of bug 814335.

And yes, sorry for the late reply, go ahead ;)
Comment 6 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2021-11-14 14:04:00 UTC
It seems it looks like a dupe of bug 814335

While going to revbump crossover ebuild I wondered if simply making it depend only in sys-libs/libxcrypt[compat] for not needing to rev-revbump it in the future again when all will be migrated.

As a side note, it seems app-backup/tsm , dev-db/percona-xtrabackup-bin, games-strategy/knights-demo , net-im/webex, net-misc/nxplayer and net-p2p/resilio-sync packages would suffer the same issue.

Should we take advantage of this and update all of them? To reversed || ( ) logic or simply sys-libs/libxcrypt[compat] directly?

Thanks for your thoughts

I didn't bother revbumping as Portage will end up re-reading the ebuilds anyway if people haven't upgraded yet (and the migration has already occurred in tree, so folks can't really do an upgrade before migrating easily) and this is working around a Portage bug in the first place.

Thanks for spotting that!

I don't think there's too much more we can do here sadly :(
