upstream has released 1.4.4 with some significant improvements that will be useful for those of us experimenting with this new protocol so I appreciate a bump when time is available

Just to note that I've had some serious problems with the monotonic clock and other stuff on arm with 1.4.4-rc.1, but hopefully those are OK for native linux builds
