Description David Held 2005-01-22 21:46:45 UTC
With a brand new install of Gentoo using bash3, the following environment variables are set in the bash shell:

MAIL=/home/username/
MAILCHECK=60

This causes a message like "you have mail in /home/username" to be displayed on the shell every minute or so with a new line.

I'm not sure exactly where these variables are coming from as they weren't in any of my .bash* or .profile files, nor did I see them in /etc, but they should not be set like this.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

What version of sys-apps/shadow do you have installed ?
Comment 2 David Held 2005-02-09 23:12:51 UTC
sys-apps/shadow-4.0.5-r2
Comment 3 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-10 09:29:45 UTC
If you could please unmask sys-apps/shadow-4.0.5-r3 via
/etc/portage/package.keywords on your system and update. It should be fixed
in that version and that fix is part of bug #70101 IIRC.

Marking as dup of #81421, as there is some more progress.
